Book and Wine Pairings Franzen and Franzia
Book and Wine Pairings Franzen and Franzia I have never read a Jonathan Franzen novel and I never will. I have imbibed box wine, but itâs been 20 years and I only ever drank Chillable Red, which I maintain is perfectly drinkable. None of this stops me from pairing Franzen novels with Franzia varietals. Iâve chosen six pairings. Descriptions are from goodreads.com (edited for length) and franzia.com. Freedom by Jonathan Franzen paired with Crisp White by Franzia THE BOOK: In his first novel since The Corrections, Jonathan Franzen has given us an epic of contemporary love and marriage. Freedom comically and tragically captures the temptations and burdens of liberty: the thrills of teenage lust, the shaken compromises of middle age, the wages of suburban sprawl, the heavy weight of empire. In charting the mistakes and joys of Freedoms characters as they struggle to learn how to live in an ever more confusing world, Franzen has produced an indelible and deeply moving portrait of our time. THE WINE: A medium-bodied white wine with floral aromas and fruit flavors. Serve chilled. Enjoy with fresh vegetables and light pasta plates. WHY: This novel sounds medium-bodied and white, just like the wine. Purity by Jonathan Franzen paired with Refreshing White by Franzia THE BOOK: Purity is a grand story of youthful idealism, extreme fidelity, and murder. The author of The Corrections and Freedom has imagined a world of vividly original charactersâ"Californians and East Germans, good parents and bad parents, journalists and leakersâ"and he follows their intertwining paths through landscapes as contemporary as the omnipresent Internet and as ancient as the war between the sexes. Purity is the most daring and penetrating book yet by one of the major writers of our time. THE WINE: A white wine that is light and easy to drink. Serve chilled. Pair with simple pasta or seafood. WHY: Purity sounds heavy and hard to read, so I chose a wine that is its opposite. The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen paired with Rhine by Franzia THE BOOK: Enid, who loves to have fun, can still look forward to a final family Christmas and to the ten-day Nordic Pleasurelines Luxury Fall Color Cruise that she and Alfred are about to embark on. But even these few remaining joys are threatened by her husbands growing confusion and unsteadiness. As Alfred enters his final decline, the Lamberts must face the failures, secrets, and long-buried hurts that haunt them as a family if they are to make the corrections that each desperately needs. THE WINE: A fresh and crisp white wine with floral aromas and sweet flavors. Serve with lighter meats and cheeses. Serve chilled. WHY: A chilled wine for a chilling(ly bad?) novel. How To Be Alone by Jonathan Franzen paired with Pinot Grigio/Colombard by Franzia THE BOOK: While the essays in this collection range in subject matter from the sex-advice industry to the way a supermax prison works, each one wrestles with the essential themes of Franzens writing: the erosion of civil life and private dignity; and the hidden persistence of loneliness in postmodern, imperial America. Reprinted here for the first time is Franzens controversial 1996 investigation of the fate of the American novel in what became known as the Harpers essay, as well as his award-winning narrative of his fathers struggle with Alzheimers disease, and a rueful account of his brief tenure as an Oprah Winfrey author. THE WINE: A fresh, light-bodied white wine with citrus flavors and a vibrant finish. Best served chilled. Enjoy with salads and grilled seafood. WHY: A collection of essays is unlikely to have a vibrant finish, but this wine promises one. Strong Motion by Jonathan Franzen paired with Moscato by Franzia THE BOOK: Louis Holland arrives in Boston in a spring of strange happeningsâ"earthquakes strike the city, and the first one kills his grandmother. During a bitter feud over the inheritance Louis falls in love with Renee Seitchek, a passionate and brilliant seismologist, whose discoveries about the origin of the earthquakes complicate everything. Potent and vivid, Strong Motion is a complex story of change from the forceful imagination of Jonathan Franzen. THE WINE: A sweet wine with delicate aromas of juicy peach and flavors of ripe apricot. Serve chilled. Enjoy with spicy foods and Asian cuisine. WHY: This book cover features a womans nipples, which is as inappropriate as my choice of a wine that smells like a juicy peach. Farther Away by Jonathan Franzen paired with Chardonnay by Franzia THE BOOK: In Farther Away, which gathers together essays and speeches written mostly in the past five years, Franzen returns with renewed vigor to the themes, both human and literary, that have long preoccupied him. Taken together, these essays trace the progress of unique and mature mind wrestling with itself, with literature, and with some of the most important issues of our day. Farther Away is remarkable, provocative, and necessary. THE WINE: A crisp wine with a clean finish. Semi-dry and medium bodied. Serve chilled. Complements chicken, simple pastas and seafood. WHY: Simple. Pastas.

Grief in The Epic of Gilgamesh - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 1041 Downloads: 1 Date added: 2019/07/29 Category History Essay Level High school Tags: Gilgamesh Essay Did you like this example? In this mystical tale of friendship and the quest for immortality, the theme of grief is emphasized when Gilgamesh is forever changed by the death of his dear friend Enkidu. Gilgamesh is confronted by the struggles of mortals and is profoundly effected by the injustice that was Enkidus untimely death. For Gilgamesh, Enkidu is a symbol for the natural world. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Grief in The Epic of Gilgamesh" essay for you Create order His character is vital to the transition that Gilgamesh goes through and his search for immortality is sparked by the grief he experiences. Gilgamesh begins the epic as a rash, arrogant young king who takes what he wants with little regard for anyone else. He forces himself on women, and forced men to do his biddings for him. He saw himself for the fraction of a god that he was, and for him that put him in a position higher than noblemen and peasants alike. Though he is the hero of this epic, he had to go on a long journey and underwent many hardships (Norton 1.29) to become the great king he left in his legacy, including the loss of his friend. Through themes of grief and friendship and symbols of nature and mortality, it is clear that Gilgamesh must experience this tragedy in order to learn the lesson that death is inevitable and the only way achieve immortality is to live fully. The friendship that builds between Gilgamesh and Enkidu in undeniably symbolic of the relationship between man and the natural world. His death causes a major disruption for Gilgamesh mentally, and changes the way he envisions humanity and life in general. Enkidu is born from nature, raised by nature and only becomes interested in the fruits of civilized life when he encounters humanity. Since he can no longer connect with nature in the same way again, which is privy to the complexity of the relationship between the Sumerians and nature, he proceeds to making his mission seeking to fight Gilgamesh. Once the two eventually become friends and set out on their quest to kill Humbaba, it is clear that Enkidu encourages Gilgamesh to take the life of Humbaba. The fact that Gilgamesh agrees shows that there is trust between them, so their bond is very influential to Gilgamesh and his decision making. After Enkidu gets word of his sentencing, he curses everyone for playing a part in taking h im out of the wilderness and removing him from nature, which ultimately lead to his death. It is only after the god Shamash enlightened him did he realize that if it hadnt been for Shamhat meeting him, he would have never met Gilgamesh. Enkidu becomes content with dying because he gained a beautiful friend to whom he was totally devoted. His death effected Gilgamesh so greatly because he had found a true friend in Enkidu. Even Ninsun, when interpreting Gilgameshs dream, told him that Enkidu was a companion who rescues a friend (1.295) implying that he was in need of that kind of relationship. With a kinship this strong, Gilgamesh would naturally be heartbroken at his death. The theme of grief is heavily shown through the dark tones in the dialogue of Gilgamesh over Enkidus body. May the Roads of Enkidu to the Cedar Forest mourn you and not fall silent night or day. May the Elders of the broad city of Uruk-Haven mourn you. May the peoples who gave their blessing after us mourn you. May the men of the mountains and hills mourn you. May the pasture lands shriek in mourning as if it were your mother. (8.8-13) In this passage, Gilgamesh speaks and calls upon all living things, humanity and the natural world to mourn his passing. Before, Gilgamesh was irreverent towards the earth and humanity, yet after experiencing loss and grief, he cries out to the mountains and plains like family to mourn Enkidu. He wanted the entirety of the earth to lament his lost friend. This tragedy causes a major change in the way that Gilgamesh sees life, death and mortality. Gilgamesh tries desperately to answer the eternal question that is death. He struggles to understand the finality and experiences very human emotions, and contemplates existence. Through Gilgamesh is two-thirds a god, his morality is shown through his grief. On his journey, he encounters Siduri, who could be interpreted as a character symbolic of truth. She gives Gilgamesh a different perspective on life. As he changes by simply coping with the idea that life is never promised, she also introduces to him the idea that his life could inevitably be short as well. She encourages him to be happy day and night (10.72) she does not necessary believe in trying to leave behind any kind of legacy but rather to only focus on the time he has on earth. Though it would seem to be an answer to his quest, to not pay mind to death because it is inevitable, but Gilgamesh does not listen to her and feels there is still more knowledge to be had. He seeks this further knowledge in Utanapishtim, who give s him the secret to the magic youth flower. The fact that the flower is bitten by the snake and then dies, is symbolic of the themes of death and loss because it serves as yet another illustration of the truth about life and death. Though Gilgamesh left him empty handed, it is possible that Utanapishtim serves the purpose of teaching and reiterating this lesson to Gilgamesh. As Gilgamesh journeys home he comes to the realization that his legacy already thrives in Uruk which is his pride and glory. He transitions from seeking the truth and meanings of life to coming to the acceptance of his mortality. As he looks upon the city, he says to Urshanabi Study the foundation terrace, and examine the brickwork, (11.314-315) and marvel at the beauty of his many creations. The theme of grief is present throughout this epic through the death of the symbolic character Enkidu, and his death not only changes Gilgamesh, but also teaches him a valuable lesson that eventually allows him to fulfil his life journey. Perhaps if Enkidu had never been sentenced to death, and Gilgamesh would have never learned the lesson, he would never have been able to become a great king.

Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s Slander free essay sample
When searching for a new book to read, people are often drawn to one that has an intriguing cover, not even bothering to learn what the book is actually about. Although the old saying ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t judge a book by its coverâ⬠may seem foolish, people often use this tendency. Similar to judging a book by its cover, people commonly judge others based on rumors and reputations. Harper Lee depicts this theme in To Kill a Mockingbird, demonstrating that one must dig beyond the surface to find the truth. Although Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s outrageous claims about Boo Radley have the potential to sway Jem and Scout, the children boldly choose to look beyond the erratic rumors Miss Stephanie feeds them and instead believe in Atticusââ¬â¢ core philosophy of climbing in another personââ¬â¢s skin and walking around in it. Since doing so enables the children to better understand Booââ¬â¢s situation and establish an unconventional friendship with him, this one simple decision ultimately results in Boo saving their lives, which most likely would not have happened if Jem and Scout had believed Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s false gossip. We will write a custom essay sample on Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s Slander or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The unknown nature of Arthur ââ¬Å"Booâ⬠Radley gives the children a blank canvas of his personality that is painted by the prejudiced views of Miss Stephanie to create a distorted image of him. The neighborhood relationship the children have with Miss Stephanie is based largely on the phony information she tells them. This is conveyed from the moment that the reader is first acquainted with Miss Stephanie. She is introduced as the neighborhood source of gossip on the Radley family. Interestingly, Jem and Scout turned to Miss Stephanie, of all people, in hopes of learning more about their mysterious neighbor. This shows that Miss Stephanie is infamous for sticking her nose into other peopleââ¬â¢s business, which is not something to be proud of. At the same time, her fabricated stories give the children a false image of Boo. Being young and gullible, Jem and Scout have no further knowledge of Boo to contradict Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s lies. They were deceived into judging Boo without knowing the slightest bit of his true nature. Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s attempt to brainwash the naive children into believing that Boo is a monster is illustrated when she spreads false rumors: ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËMiss Stephanie Crawford said she woke up in the middle of the night one time and saw him looking straight through the window at herâ⬠¦said his head was like a skull lookinââ¬â¢ at herââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (12-13). Once again, Miss Stephanie is implanting lies into the minds of the innocent children about Boo that present him in the worst light. Obviously, the children are mesmerized by these fictional stories. Because of Booââ¬â¢s mysterious past and unusual life, Scout and Jem are led to believe that Boo is a monstrosity of the human race. Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s skewed image of him creates a prejudiced painting of Boo in the minds of the children. This intolerance of diversity could permanently affect the manner in which Scout and Jem view the members of their community. The reader knows that the children take Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s claims as truth and think of Boo as a freak because of the judgments they pass themselves. Take for example when Jem is illustrating Booââ¬â¢s appearance to Dill: ââ¬Å"Jem gave a reasonable description of Boo: Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, thatââ¬â¢s why his hands were bloodstainedââ¬â[â⬠¦] his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the timeâ⬠(13). The reader can definitely see how the children have been disillusioned into believing that Boo is some type of malicious monster. It is exemplified that the children are quick to make judgments on the unknown. Moreover, these prejudices are based on no factual evidence. The children obviously believe her because scout said Jem gave a ââ¬Å"reasonableâ⬠description of Boo. Atticus is extremely disappointed with how his children are dealing with the information they are getting. He sees that his children are slipping into a trap and are starting to mimic a society that has for a long time been prejudiced towards anyone and anything peculiar. Atticus struggles to stop the bleeding by commanding the children to leave Boo alone, but the damage has been done. This damage that is the skewed portrait of Boo in the minds of the children, can only be remodeled through the paintbrush of Atticusââ¬â¢ wisdom. Jem and Scout, through Atticusââ¬â¢ teachings, strive to uncover the true Boo Radley. After a disappointing first day of school, Scout comes home with complaint about her new teacher, Miss Caroline. In response, Atticus tells Scout to find out who a person really is before formulating an opinion: ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËYou never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of viewââ¬âââ¬â¢ [ ] ââ¬Ëââ¬âuntil you climb into his skin and walk around in itââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (30). Atticusââ¬â¢ core philosophy leads him to always see the best in people. He cannot comprehend how a human being could judge a person without actually knowing who they are. This point of view is in sharp contrast to Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s. Miss Stephanie instinctively judges people based on the smallest sliver of information. She believes you can get an accurate interpretation of a person without finding the facts. Atticus provides a counter insight for the children to oppose the views of Miss Stephanie. This new perspective teaches them not to judge people until they understand them fully. The simplicity of this concept helps Scout realize how one must understand othersââ¬â¢ personal situations. This puts Scout and Jem at crossroads where they must make a difficult decision: should they continue judging people based on appearance or should they take Atticusââ¬â¢ advice and get to know people before they formulate opinions? Their struggle between the two contrasting ideas of Atticus and Miss Stephanie continues in the case of Mrs. Dubose. Atticus boldly claims that Mrs. Dubose was the bravest person he knew. The children are appalled by this statement. They viewed Mrs. Dubose as bitter old woman. They were unaware of her morphine addiction and hastily jumped to a conclusion. The consequences of prejudice are now crystallized in their minds. As the novel progresses, Scout and Jem take on Atticusââ¬â¢ ideology towards judgment, and they try to see things from other peopleââ¬â¢s points of view. One instance of this comes up when Jem is hypothesizing why Boo Radley stays inside: ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËI think Iââ¬â¢m beginning to understand why Boo Radleyââ¬â¢s stayed shut up in the house all this time â⬠¦ itââ¬â¢s because he wants to stay insideâ⬠ââ¬â¢ (227). Jem and Scout take the initiative to try and see things from Booââ¬â¢s point of view. They make a conscious effort to understand where Boo is coming from and he befriends Jem and Scout through subtle gestures: He leaves little gifts and knickknacks for the children in the knothole of the big oak tree in his yard. The reader now can see that Jem finally understands that Boo is one of the many victims of the townââ¬â¢s prejudice which is inflamed by Miss Stephanie. One of Jemââ¬â¢s theories of Booââ¬â¢s seclusion is that Boo does not want to face the cruelty of mankind. Atticus has now gotten through to Jem with Atticusââ¬â¢ most valuable lesson and a major theme in this book how it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. This has given Jem a far more mature perspective on people than before. Miss Stephanie has failed to corrupt the minds of the townââ¬â¢s youth; coincidentally; Atticus has prevailed in trying to better the future of Maycomb. The ability of Scout and Jem to look past prejudices set forth by Miss Stephanie will end up helping them in the long run. By being able to realize the innocence in Boo Radley, Scout and Jem make a life or death decision. Soon after the trial, Bob Ewell becomes exceedingly hateful towards the Finch Family. On the way home from a school play, Scout and Jem are attacked by Bob Ewell. They are saved from the clutches of death by a mysterious figure. Scout later identifies their savior as Boo Radley. Scout and Jemââ¬â¢s effort to befriend Boo gives Boo the courage to come out in public for the first time in over twenty years. This is a testament to the characters of Scout and Jem and how refused to fall victim to the trap that most Maycomb residents are not so lucky to escape. If Jem and Scout had taken Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s baseless opinions on Boo as truth, then it is highly likely that they would both be dead. Fortunately, they make a decision to find out who the real Boo is and it led to their lives being saved. They showed Boo that they respected him for who he was, a mockingbird who ââ¬Å"singsâ⬠for the children without seeking any recognition. Jem and Scout are finally able to realize the positive effects of seeing things from othersââ¬â¢ points of view. After this unforgettable event, the children will never judge people without all the facts again. After Boo is no longer needed, Scout walks him home. As Scout is about to leave the Radley residence, she has a revelation: ââ¬Å"Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Radley porch was enoughâ⬠(279). In this passage, the reader can see that Scout has finally learned not to judge people without looking from their perspective. Scout is literally and figuratively able to see from Booââ¬â¢s point of view in this passage. Earlier in the novel, Scout was terrified of the Radley estate because of all the horrific tales she had heard from Miss Stephanie. Now actually standing on the porch and looking out, Scout sees what Boo has been seeing for all these years. This is the turning point in the novel where Scout is finally beginning to understand why Boo is the man he is. Scout and Jem have been able to fight the prejudices laid out by Miss Stephanie and the town of Maycomb and by doing so they have saved their lives. The readers can see Scout apply this new-found knowledge to a fictional story, The Gray Ghost: ââ¬Å"Anââ¬â¢ they chased him ââ¬Ënââ¬â¢ never could catch him ââ¬Ëcause they didnââ¬â¢t know what he looked like, anââ¬â¢ Atticus, when they finally saw him, why he hadnââ¬â¢t done any of those things Atticus, he was real nice. â⬠This passage exemplifies the major theme of the book: looking past prejudices. This scene, coming at the end of the book, sums up the whole story very well and sends a clear message to the reader. Throughout the book, many people become the victim of Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s prejudice. From this passage, the reader can see that Scout has finally rid herself of Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s misrepresentations of othersââ¬â¢ characters. This prejudice was replaced by Atticusââ¬â¢ belief of looking at things from different peopleââ¬â¢s perspectives. After this experience, Atticusââ¬â¢ philosophy will be forever engraved in Scout and Jemââ¬â¢s minds. By the end of the novel, Scout and Jem are mature enough to follow Atticusââ¬â¢ philosophy and not give into Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s severe ways of avoiding the plain truth. Although they did not know it at the time, this one decision saved their lives. Scout and Jem do not follow in Miss Stephanieââ¬â¢s footsteps. They do not try to hide their fear of the unknown by being prejudiced. This displays a strong theme of looking past personal prejudices and getting to know people for who they really are. This can be applied to every day life and is very prevalent in our world today. As with a book, the reader must interpret and unearth the truth behind a bookââ¬â¢s cover to ultimately come to an informed conclusion. Although extremely cliche, one lesson still holds the test of time and can be applied to everyone in every corner of the world: do not judge a book by its cover.

Free Essays on Intelligence
Intelligence/IQ Test Intelligence is the ability to acquire information, analyze the information, and be able to use what you have acquired in the future. You also need to know how to survive in the world, which involves common sense and to know right from wrong. The theory that is the closet to the definition of intelligence would be Gardnerââ¬â¢s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Everyone is different, which means people can obtain the same information. However, some people may not be able to analyze the information while others are able to analyze and use the information well. Gardner believes there are seven distinct kinds of intelligence: Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Musical, Spatial, Bodily Kinesthetic, Interpersonal, and Intrapersonal. He believes that each person has multiple forms of these intelligence. IQ test should not be paper and pencil test. Children should be observed throughout a day, where there are activities that every child must do that tap into each of the intelligences Gardner has described. The activities can test several of the intelligences at one time or can test just one. One activity that taps into Musical intelligences is to play a melody and have the child play it back. An example of an activity that test different intelligence at the same time could be; have the children work in a group and they have to write a short story and be able to use movements or objects to help them tell the story. This activity involves Interpersonal intelligence because they are working with other people. It also involves Linguistic intelligence because you are writing a story. If the children use movements to help them tell the story then the activity would also use Bodily Kinesthetic intelligence. Some of the pros of this kind of evaluation of intelligence are; children will not be compared to each other, and they will know what they are good at and what they are bad at. Free Essays on Intelligence Free Essays on Intelligence Why IQ Tests Don't Test Intelligence The task of trying to quantify a personââ¬â¢s intelligence has been a goal of psychologists since before the beginning of this century. The Binet-Simon scales were first proposed in 1905 in Paris, France and various sorts of tests have been evolving ever since. One of the important questions that always comes up regarding these tools is what are the tests really measuring? Are they measuring a personââ¬â¢s intelligence? Their ability to perform well on standardized tests? Or just some arbitrary quantity of the personââ¬â¢s IQ? When examining the situations around which these tests are given and the content of the tests themselves, it becomes apparent that however useful the tests may be for standardizing a groupââ¬â¢s intellectual ability, they are not a good indicator of intelligence. To issue a truly standardized test, the testing environment should be the same for everyone involved. If anything has been learned from the psychology of perception, it is clear that a personââ¬â¢s environment has a great deal to do with their cognitive abilities. Is the light flickering? Is the paint on the walls an unsettling shade? Is the temperature too hot or too cold? Is the chair uncomfortable? Or in the worst case, do they have an illness that day? To test a personââ¬â¢s mind, it is necessary to utilize their body in the process. If everyoneââ¬â¢s body is placed in different conditions during the testing, how is it expected to get standardized results across all the subjects? Because of this assumption that everyone will perform equally independent of their environment, intelligence test scores are skewed and cannot be viewed as standardized, and definitely not as an example of a personââ¬â¢s intelligence. It is obvious that a personââ¬â¢s intelligence stems from a variety of traits. A few of these that are often tested are reading comprehension, vocabulary, and spatial relations. B... Free Essays on Intelligence Intelligence has been defined by prominent researchers in the field as : Binet and Simon (1905): the ability to judge well, to understand well, to reason well. Terman (1916): the capacity to form concepts and to grasp their significance. Wechsler (1939): the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with the environment. Gardner (1986): the ability or skill to solve problems or to fashion products which are valued within one or more cultural settings. Detailed definition of intelligence: Life is essentially a relationship between a living organism and its environment, but it is a permanently threatened and unstable equilibrium. As long as the equilibrium between the organism and its environment is maintained, no further adaptation is required and the living process remains automatic. But when an obstacle, a hesitation or a choice occurs, this blind activity becomes insufficient and consciousness appears.Consciousness is not yet synonymous with intelligence; it is first a feeling or a need but not truly a thought-up relationship or the conscious awareness of a relationship. To be intelligent is to understand, and to understand means to be aware of relationships. Judgment is what makes us aware of relationships. To be intelligent is also to be able to solve new problems or to deal with open-ended situations. In other words, it is about discovering relationships or being capable of invention. Thus, all intelligent action is characterized by the comprehension of relationships between the given elements and a finding out of what has to be done, given those relationships, to create new relationships, solve a difficulty or reach a desired goal. To study intelligence is therefore to study judgment and invention. Logicians have defined judgment as the assertion of a relationship between two ideas. To say: "dog is a mammal" is to establish a relationship between the...

Why do constructivists believe that identity matters Do you agree Essay
Why do constructivists believe that identity matters Do you agree Critically evaluate - Essay Example It is with this respect that Constructivism as a theory tries to explain how humans learn and construct their knowledge and understanding of their environment. Checkel (1998) found that knowledge acquisition is a continuous active process whereby learners tend to construct or develop ideas which are normally based on their previous and current knowledge. In order to make decisions, learners depend on cognitive structure to formulate hypothesis and come up with decisions based on the selected information. Klotz and Lynch (2007) described cognitive structure as a mental structure that gives a learnerââ¬â¢s experience some organization and meaning. Although learners always come across new experiences, constructivists believe that an individual possesses internal power to give meaning to their new experiences (McGrew, 2011a). McGrew (2011b) further argues that the power resides only within an individual and not within the institution that surrounds them. Alexander Wendtââ¬â¢s theory of constructivism is based on the identity concept of an individual in the process of knowledge acquisition (Checkel, 1998). Identity being the core concept of Constructivism theory, Price and Reus-Smit (1998) defined it as an aspect that uniquely distinguishes an individual from the rest. An aspect that an individual tends to take pride in and which more or less cannot be changed. Checkel (1998) found that identity is influenced by the learnerââ¬â¢s background and cultural origin, since people adapt what they come across in the society they are raised in. In this regard, society plays a major role in molding up an individualââ¬â¢s identity because learners build up knowledge based on their perspective of the experiences they encounter. Finnemore (2011) states that it is also necessary to put into account the cultural background of an individual in their process of learning since it helps in shaping out the knowledge that they create. Due to the diversity of cultures, individuals tend to

Analysis of Fagins Last Night Alive in Charles Dickens Oliver Twist E
Analysis of Fagin's Last Night Alive in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist Combining entertainment with a deep critique of the contemporary socioeconomic system and philosophy, Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist explores the reality that in Victorian London, crime was neither heroic nor romantic. A setting of debauchery, thievery, prostitution, and murder, Fagin's underworld didactically illustrates the "unattractive and repulsive truth (36)," that one's environment--not birth--influences character. Attempting to introduce society to the evil it had created, Dickens penned "Fagin's Last Night Alive," manipulating both his literal and figurative audience, capitalizing on the current sentiments and issues. By typifying Fagin as the absolute evil, Dickens uses contemporary religious temperaments and society's apathy and ignorance, to reveal a reality about the underworld lifestyle that society was not willing to acknowledge--society is somewhat guilty for the underworld's corruption. Distant, detached, and ignorant of society's degenerate condition, the developing society feared reality's ugliness. Believing that decadence encouraged decadence and that one's birth influenced one's character, society sought welfare reform, establishing centralized institutions for public assistance. Once established, the Poor Law separated families, put the poor to work in occupations that no one wanted, creating an environment that was less appealing for public assistance, and more appealing for employment. Believing that it had made today better than yesterday, society went about its business, ignoring the reality of starvation, illness, and death. The conditions after the Poor Law forced people to avoid public assistance, leaving them the only... ...f society must rid itself of devils, it should also accept the guilt for the things it has created. Understanding the relationship between environment and morality--indifference and depravity--Dickens evaluated what the system does to a person, how it classifies, how it deforms. Fagin manages the underworld, connoting corruption as an entertaining, enjoyable, and artful game not only because of his intrinsic craftiness, but also because it is the only way he knows to survive. Exploiting his audience's attitudes, Dickens shaped a character with religious stereotypes to ensure that his readers could recognize the absolute evil it had bore through its ignorance and apathy--poverty is a product of a societal environment. Comparative Analysis of Models in the Competitive Market
Every rational individual acknowledges that businesses need to be competitive in order to thrive. My comparative analysis will recognize the various models used in the competitive marketplace and compare the end-results of these models. The four models that I will be comparing are: step checklist, transformation model, Mintzbergââ¬â¢s physiognomy, and the economic sector analysis. In line with my analysis I will also be using my experience as a sales marketer for Aramco Oil Company to provide key examples about how these fundamental processes occur on an every day basis. When comprehending comparative models you must first understand that a model is simply a complex or systematic description of the competitive marketplace. These models are used to aid individuals in seeing the structure or design of the marketplace. Initially, we will focus first on the transformation model and its hand in the marketplace. Looking at the general word ââ¬Ëtransformââ¬â¢ you will see how wisely chosen this process is. To transform is to create something from a raw material. In this model, this transformation occurs when inputs are transformed to outputs. This process is a very high level look at the marketplace. It looks simply at what manner of item when in to the system in order to procure a end result item. Almost like a circuit, it is the in-s and out-s which keep the market process in a continuous movement and growth. The more raw material which goes into a system the more outputs you expect to see. In my role, as a sales marketer of Aramco Oil Company I see this process every day. The raw material of oil is processed to produce a high demand product, and thus the transformation process is a never-ending cycle. As a model though, this process does not account for all the idiosyncrasies or complex factors that play a role in the create of this high end product. In fact, the process is so high leveled that I see the Step Checklist as a much more logical look at the process (Armson, Rosalind, John Martin, Susan Carr, Roger Spear, and Tony Walsh.) Of the four models being compared, the Step Checklist is by far the most organized in its structural intact and outlook on the competitive market. This checklist looks at the key influences in the competitive marketplace. It focuses on the social, technological, economic, and political influences by concisely breaking down various aspects of how, why, where, when, and what possible affects they have on an organization. Unlike the transformation model, this checklist supplies the analyzer with various possibilities to be on the lookout for when determining a course of action. Furthermore, this checklist allows for a simplistic and widely applicable usage of these factors. Whereas the transformation model was a very board look at the inputs and outputs, this Step Checklist is a systematic perspective of social factors like demographics and age-groups. By looking at the technological components of the competitive marketplace, a company like my own has the opportunity to ensure that it is staying or making advancements along with the competitive other players. Economic changes can be watched or statistically analyzed to make appropriate changes or adaptations should the competitive marketplace change. My company is a key player in the oil industry and must gauge how its future profitability will be at the best advantage. From a political avenue, this model is essential to make sure that all players in the competitive marketplace are aware of legislative policies or strategies that might affect the industry. Furthermore, politics has a constant role in policies changing or advancements. Should a sales representative like myself not account for this changes our clients will see that we are not staying in line with policies and perhaps be adversely affected by our lack of adhering to those policies. This analysis of competitors is a means towards identifying the companyââ¬â¢s competitors, understanding what their strategies are, recognizing their objectives, seeing how their strengths and weaknesses are seen in a checklist manner, and recognizing reaction patterns to those factors which affect the marketplace (Kotler 234-247) Moving on to the Mintzbergââ¬â¢s physiognomy model, many analysts might see this model as highly subjective in origin. In comparison to both the Transformation and Step Checklist models, this model is dependent on looking at the power various players wield in the competitive marketplace or industry. This model stresses that there is a ââ¬Ëcast of charactersââ¬â¢ in an organization which ranges from owners to employees to special interest groups to various other entities. Based upon this model, we see a very visual representation of the marketplace. It is unique to see the differences between the models. Transformation model is seemingly a process flow. The Step Checklist was created based upon influences and logically connects or affects upon the industry. Now here we have Mintzbergââ¬â¢s physiognomyââ¬â¢s model. What stuck out at me first is that physiognomy is clearly the study of a personââ¬â¢s palm to determine that individualââ¬â¢s fate. This destiny is determined based upon a higher source of power which dictates what is to occur in the future for that individual. Here this model looks at the ââ¬Ëpowerââ¬â¢ play of what will determine the fate of the company based upon the various sectors which play a role in its maintaining profitability (Armson, Rosalind, John Martin, Susan Carr, Roger Spear, and Tony Walsh.). It focuses primarily on the strategies or activities of these entities. These strategies or activities will overall affect the competitive industry in some manner. For instance, in my company should the owners fail to provide adequate compensation to the employees they can either strike or retain work elsewhere. If the company lacks adequately experienced employees it will fail to retain clients or creditability in the eyes of its public. This can potentially damage or hinder the economic profitability or continued success of Aramco Oil Company. If that occurs, as a sales marketer I will have a difficult time convincing others that the company is maintaining its correct directions and gross profit margins. At this time, I will roll right into the economic sector analysis model. The competitive marketplace is built on the ideology of ââ¬Ëeconomicsââ¬â¢. This fundamental model looks at sectors, the environment, and markets. Without bumping the company against its competitors we will fail to recognize where growth or change is required. The sectors themselves compete amongst themselves and there are definite signs of where one company might be affecting or causing a chain-reaction within other companies. For instance, an EDI system allows for less manual maintenance. If a company fails to make appropriate changes or does not advance itself like other, then the other companies in that particular sector will swiftly overtake its market shares. In the oil industry there is often a state of rapid growth and it is wise for a company to watch for such changes. Like the Mintzbergââ¬â¢s physiognomy, there is a look at the power players or influences in this model. The power look in this case is the economic sector and other players in that particular sector. All in all, measures must be taken to ensure that the marketplace is watched for its stability, and adversely if unstable occurrences are happening. These models can all be used to determine how the competitive marketplace is doing and how to identify influences that affect it. In general, these models each have their strengths and weaknesses. In general each model can be used to analyze various aspects of the marketplace. This analysis can be broken down into the strategies used to determine how the marketplace needs to react as changes occur in it and around it. Courtroom Case Phyllis A. Roth Essay - 1558 Words
Courtroom Case: Phyllis A. Roth The author, Phyllis A. Roth, is not your ordinary feminist, because she is also a Freudian. A better term to describe Roth would be a psychoanalytic feminist. One of her works as an author can be found in the back of the book Dracula: A Norton Critical Edition. Her criticism article is titled Suddenly Sexual Woman in Bram Stokerââ¬â¢s Dracula. In her article she analyzes the famous novel Dracula. She explores how gender plays a role in the novel and the concept of femininity. She writes about the transformation that takes place when a proper lady turns into a sexual vampire. Her article points out where hostility toward women s sexuality is displayed in the novel, that the average reader may not pick up on. Roth has a strong argument. Let us examine Rothââ¬â¢s case. First, let us look at her thesis statement. The argument Roth is trying to make is that the ââ¬Å"pre-Oedipal focus of the fantasies, specifically the child s relation with and hostility toward the mother, and to indicate how the novelââ¬â¢s fantasies are managed in such a way as to transform horror into pleasure. I would emphasize that for both the Victorians and twentieth century readers, much of the novelââ¬â¢s great appeal derives from its hostility toward female sexualityâ⬠(Roth 411). In order to understand her argument that she is trying to make, you need to understand the definition of pre-Oedipal and where the term comes from.
